Albania to increase reimbursable medicine fund by 28% in 2027

Albania's Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has released a Medium-Term Budget Program for 2027–2029, projecting a significant increase in funding for reimbursable medicines. In 2027, the fund is expected to reach 17.28 billion lek, representing a 28% increase compared to 2026.

Beyond increased funding, the program outlines a gradual expansion of the Reimbursable Medicines List. The number of covered medicines is projected to grow from 1,356 in 2026 to 1,406 by 2029, adding approximately 50 new medicines to the list over the three-year period.

The number of patients supported by the scheme is expected to remain steady at approximately 400,000 per year through 2029. Consequently, the average budgetary allocation per patient is forecasted to rise from roughly 33,750 lek in 2026 to approximately 47,000 lek by 2029.
