Albania to launch Price Watch Albania platform for consumer transparency
Starting in September, Albania will launch an online platform called ‘Price Watch Albania’ to increase market transparency and combat price abuses. The initiative requires major supermarket chains to publish daily prices for an initial selection of 10 basic basket products.
Deputy Minister of Economy Enkelejd Musabelliu stated that while the government cannot dictate profit margins in a free market economy, the platform aims to inform consumers and stimulate competition among retailers. The ministry cited models from Hungary, Spain, Portugal, and Italy as inspiration for this price-comparison tool.
Economic expert Igli Tola noted that the initiative should have a positive impact on household finances and product quality by allowing citizens to monitor costs more effectively. The project is expected to expand to a wider range of products over time.
