Albania to launch solar auction including battery storage

Albania is preparing a new solar energy auction, scheduled for late 2026 or early 2027, which will incorporate battery energy storage systems for the first time. Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Enea Karakaçi announced that the tender is being developed in cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The inclusion of battery storage follows a new electricity sector law approved in June 2026, which allows for such integration to better balance electricity production and demand. This move responds to requests from renewable energy producers to improve grid management.

By the end of 2025, Albania had installed more than 600 MW of new solar photovoltaic capacity. Solar energy currently accounts for more than 11 percent of the country’s total electricity production.
