Albanian Constitutional Court reviews judicial salary law challenge

The Constitutional Court of Albania has decided to hear a request from judicial and prosecutorial associations challenging recent legislative changes to the salaries of judges and prosecutors. The legal challenge follows the Parliament's approval of amendments to the law on the status of magistrates during a late-night session on September 18.

Multiple organizations, including the Union of Judges of Albania, the National Association of Judges, the Association of Prosecutors, and the Forum of Female Judges, have called for the suspension and annulment of the law. They argue the legislation is unconstitutional, citing a lack of financial analysis from the Council of Ministers and ineffective consultation with interest groups. The associations further claim that the parliamentary procedure violated constitutional deadlines and that the issue impacts judicial independence rather than just compensation levels.
