Albanian flamingo protests spark regional political debate

Protests in Tirana have continued for weeks, with demonstrators adopting flamingos as a symbol of resistance against the Albanian government’s policies and perceived elite capture of the state. The movement expanded beyond environmental concerns about a project in Zvërnec, turning into a broader critique of governance, public‑trust erosion and economic stagnation.

The demonstrations attracted international attention when Italian MEP Ilaria Salis visited the capital, framing the protests as a European‑wide issue. Salis later faced a court ruling in Milan for alleged wrongful dismissal from her former EU parliamentary role, adding a legal twist to the story. Activists from Kosovo have also cited the Albanian protests, suggesting the symbolism could inspire similar civic actions in the neighbouring country.

By late summer the protests lost steam, with crowds thinning and the initial enthusiasm giving way to routine, mirroring earlier Albanian opposition groups such as Lulzim Bash’s 2017 movement.
