Albanian government criticised over EU integration hurdles and price inflation

Former Democratic Party parliamentary candidate Ilir Alimehmeti accused Prime Minister Edi Rama's administration of blocking Albania's progress toward EU and NATO membership. He blamed internal problems such as corruption scandals, arrests of senior officials and alleged policies aimed at depopulating the country, saying these undermine public confidence and the EU integration agenda.

Economy Minister Delina Ibrahimaj countered that recent global price spikes—linked to Middle‑East conflicts—have affected Albania, but the country's price increases have been far more moderate (about 18‑21% versus 67‑87% internationally). She reported inflation at 2.8% in April 2026, highlighted market monitoring and the Transparency Board as safeguards, and noted that while no large new subsidies are planned, the government stands ready to intervene should external conditions deteriorate.
