Albanian government rejects Zvërnec tourism project

The Albanian government has opposed an initial tourism development proposal for the Zvërnec area. Documents indicate the project planned for hotels and residences up to eight stories high within a protected territory.

The National Agency of Protected Areas noted that the project area falls within the ‘Pishë Poro–Nartë’ Protected Landscape, affecting natural monuments such as the Limopuo Lagoon and the Molasike Hills of Zvërnec. Concerns were raised regarding the impact on migratory bird habitats, dunes, and biodiversity, as well as potential water pollution and damage to the Narta Lagoon ecosystem. Consequently, the project was deemed unacceptable in its current form, and a more in-depth environmental assessment has been requested.

The proposed ‘Zvërnec Peninsula’ project would have spanned approximately 266 hectares, featuring 1.7 million square meters of construction, including 771,000 square meters of residences and 292,000 square meters of hotel structures.

Regarding Sazan, a separate project linked to Jared Kushner does not extend into the island's terrestrial protected zone. However, the Institute of Cultural Heritage has requested surveys due to high underwater archaeological potential. The agreement stipulates no interference with the waters surrounding Sazan, which is part of the Karaburun–Sazan Marine National Park.
