Albanian government urged to extend fuel compensation for public transport

The tax administration reminded public‑transport companies that the deadline to apply for fuel compensation ends this Saturday. The scheme offers 50 lek per litre for fuel used in March, April and May 2026, a measure introduced to offset the sharp rise in fuel prices caused by the Middle‑East conflict.

The National Association of Public Transport has asked the government to prolong the support through September, covering June, July and August, because fuel prices have surged to as high as 214 lek per litre. The association warns that the continued high costs threaten operators' liquidity, jeopardise contract fulfilment and could disrupt essential public‑transport services. It also calls for faster, simpler reimbursement procedures to alleviate the financial strain on operators and ensure uninterrupted service for citizens.
