Albanian household spending and energy consumption trends
Data from INSTAT and Eurostat reveal significant trends in Albanian household spending and energy usage. In 2025, the average Albanian family of three spent approximately 95,000 lekë per month, a 2.3% increase from 2024. Food and non-alcoholic beverages remain the largest budget item, accounting for roughly 40% of monthly expenditures, with significant costs attributed to meat, dairy, and vegetables.
Regional disparities in spending are notable, with families in Tirana spending an average of 111,000 lekë per month, compared to 93,000 lekë in Korça and much lower amounts in Kukës and Dibër. While spending on entertainment and culture rose by 10%, housing-related costs, including utilities and rent, averaged just over 9,000 lekë monthly.
Regarding energy, Albania maintains one of the lowest household energy consumption rates in Europe. According to Eurostat 2024 data, Albanian consumption stood at 220 kg oil equivalent (kgoe) per capita, significantly lower than the EU average of 507 kgoe. This low consumption is attributed to heating methods; many households rely on wood, coal, or individual stoves rather than centralized gas systems, and some families lack heating systems entirely.
