Tirana protests escalate into violent clashes with police FAST-MOVING

Violent clashes erupted in Tirana as thousands of protesters engaged in confrontations with police forces. The demonstrations, which have been ongoing for over 130 days, saw protesters targeting government buildings, including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment, with stones and Molotov cocktails.

Police responded using tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds. The Ministry of Health reported at least 13 to 15 people injured, including protesters, police officers, and journalists. Among the injured were a Member of Parliament and a News24 journalist who sustained extensive burns.

The unrest is driven by widespread dissatisfaction regarding corruption, the high cost of living, and poor education standards. While some protests were initially sparked by a luxury coastal development project, the movement has expanded into a broader anti-government campaign calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. The Prime Minister has characterized the violence as a ‘hybrid war’ fueled by external actors.
