Albanian Lek strengthens as Euro hits historic low of 91.1

The Euro has reached a new historic low against the Albanian Lek, trading at 91.1 Lek according to the Bank of Albania. This represents a year-on-year decline of 6.1% for the Euro.

Market experts attribute this trend to high Euro supply and weak demand. Key drivers include consistent tourism revenue, increased service exports, and remittances. Additionally, automatic financial transactions through the banking sector, such as credit card purchases in foreign currency, have contributed to the high supply of Euros.

Economic indicators show a significant improvement in the balance of payments. For the first half of 2026, the current account deficit fell by nearly 41% compared to the previous year, reaching its lowest level since 2018. Foreign direct investment also saw a substantial increase, rising 50% to 1.144 billion euros during the same six-month period. Furthermore, a high fiscal surplus, totaling 61.6 billion Lek for the eight-month period of 2026, has further impacted market dynamics.
