Albanian media outlets face sudden Meta platform suspensions
Journalists and media outlets in Albania are raising alarms following a series of sudden account suspensions on Meta platforms. The Euronews Albania Instagram page became inaccessible shortly after an interview with MEP Sandro Gozi, who had called for transparency from Meta regarding the wave of closed Albanian accounts.
Additionally, the independent media outlet Citizens.al reported that its Facebook page was shut down without prior notice. The Association of Journalists of Albania (AGSH) stated that these consecutive closures cannot be treated as isolated technical incidents, warning that restricting media access to primary communication channels threatens media freedom and the public's right to information.
While Meta has acknowledged that some accounts were removed in error and has begun reviewing its measures, the company has not provided a full explanation for the widespread issues affecting Albanian users, including activists and politicians. The situation has prompted calls for clearer, more transparent moderation processes to prevent coordinated abuse of reporting mechanisms.
