Albanian MP Erion Braçe criticizes power centralization

Albanian Member of Parliament Erion Braçe has publicly criticized the centralization of power within the government and the current state of parliamentarism in the country. In recent statements, Braçe addressed his decision to vote in favor of the territorial reform law, clarifying that his vote was not an endorsement of the legislation or Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Braçe argued that the law is flawed and that the government has disrupted political balances by delegating power to unelected individuals rather than transferring it to institutions and leaders chosen through public votes. He noted that the current model creates cycles of dependency and power poles between the Prime Minister's administration and municipal leaders.

Braçe explained that he chose to vote with the majority to remain within the parliamentary group and maintain the ability to work, despite his disagreement with the law. He characterized the current legislative environment as one where the parliament acts as a notary for the executive branch, noting that the pressure to conform to the party line prevents meaningful democratic opposition from within the ruling Socialist Party.
