Albanian MP Marjana Koçeku resigns from Socialist Party, becomes independent

Independent MP Marjana Koçeku, known as “Neomalsore,” left Albania’s Socialist Party (PS) on 14 June 2026, stating that the party’s environmental policies were harmful and that her proposals for sustainable tourism were unwelcome. She said she faced pressure from party members and thousands of anonymous online attacks, but chose to retain her parliamentary mandate as an independent.

In an interview Koçeku criticized the government’s current tourism model, urging investment in eco‑friendly projects and protection of Albania’s natural and cultural identity. She highlighted recent citizen protests as a “revitalising social movement” and reiterated support for European Union integration, emphasizing that the EU should listen to civil society. Koçeku also disclosed that she informed Prime Minister Edi Rama of her decision, noting that the move was final and irreversible despite attempts at intimidation from within the party.

She pledged to continue working on initiatives she deems beneficial for Albanians, emphasizing conscience‑driven voting and the defence of public interests.
