Albanian opposition calls for investigation into military industry contracts

Democratic Party Deputy Klevis Balliu has raised allegations of corruption against the Albanian government regarding a military industry project involving the public company KAYO and the private firm Timak Defence.

Balliu claims that vehicles presented by Prime Minister Edi Rama as "Made in Albania" are actually international brands like Toyota Land Cruiser and MAN, rather than locally manufactured products. He challenged the legitimacy of the nascent industry, noting that Timak Defence was established in August 2025 and reported having only 14 employees as of late December.

According to the deputy, the company's long-term assets, including machinery and production equipment, totaled only approximately 146,000 lekë (roughly 1,500 euros). He argued that "With 1,500 euros, a military vehicle factory is not built. With 1,500 euros, armored vehicles are not produced." Balliu further alleged that the company's 10.5 million euros in short-term assets stem primarily from prepayments received through state contracts. He has called for SPAK to investigate the procurement process and the selection of the company to determine if there were violations of the law or unfair elimination of competition.
