Albanian opposition leader Sali Berisha slams fast‑track $302 million military aid bill

Sali Berisha, head of Albania’s Democratic Party, criticised a parliamentary session in which a fast‑track procedure was used to approve a $302 million loan from the United States for modernising the Albanian armed forces. Berisha said the Democratic Party will not vote for the bill, describing the accelerated process as unconstitutional and “the most shameful episode” in Albanian politics. He accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of trying to push the legislation through without respecting the one‑week constitutional deadline for such laws.

Berisha warned that the move undermines the rule of law and Albania’s NATO commitments, while framing the US‑funded military aid as a strategic partnership that should be handled transparently. The opposition’s stance sets up a parliamentary showdown over the defence loan and the procedure used to adopt it.
