Albanian opposition submits law repeal package tied to EU accession

Gazment Bardhi, head of the Democratic Party (PD) parliamentary group, deposited a package of legislative initiatives in the Albanian Parliament aimed at aligning the country with European Union accession requirements. The package seeks to repeal four laws: the Strategic Investments Law, recent amendments to the Protected Areas Law, the so‑called "Mountain Package" law, and provisions in the Cultural Heritage Law.

Bardi framed the Strategic Investments Law as “a symbol of the economic model of Edi Rama, based on favouritism, corruption and the use of power for private interests.” He argued that the laws enable a narrow clientelist group linked to the prime minister, undermine public interest, and jeopardise protected areas and cultural heritage. The PD also called on Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign, presenting the repeal demands as reflecting protester and citizen concerns.

The opposition claims the reforms will improve competition, protect natural and cultural sites, and advance Albania’s EU integration process.
