Albania faces judicial conflict over magistrate salary law

Albania is facing a significant institutional conflict regarding a new law governing the salaries of judges and prosecutors. Following the law's passage by Parliament and its subsequent decree by President Bajram Begaj, judicial organizations have announced plans to challenge the legislation in the Constitutional Court.

Four major judicial organizations, including the Union of Judges of Albania and the Association of Prosecutors, claim the law was passed unconstitutionally, without proper financial analysis or effective consultation. They argue the legislation violates previous Constitutional Court decisions and threatens the independence of the judiciary.

In response to the tension, Prime Minister Edi Rama has invited judicial leaders to a joint working table to seek a long-term solution that balances magistrate salaries with the broader state salary pyramid. Meanwhile, opposition members of the Democratic Party have criticized the government, alleging the law serves billion-euro interests and undermines the separation of powers.

Separately, Prime Minister Rama held meetings with supermarket representatives and suppliers to address consumer prices. He emphasized the need for transparency through a new digital platform, 'Price Watch Albania,' and urged businesses to reflect the strengthening of the lek and lower inflation in their pricing for essential goods.
