Tirana protests escalate as students and opposition demand Rama's resignation

Protests in Tirana have entered their 12th day, marked by increasing clashes between demonstrators and security forces. The movement, initially driven by student concerns regarding university conditions and education funding, has expanded to include medical professionals, academics, and supporters of the Democratic Party.

Demonstrators have targeted government buildings, including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture. Clashes involved the use of Molotov cocktails, fireworks, and stones by protesters, while police responded with water cannons, tear gas, and Rapid Intervention Forces (FNSH). At least eight people, including a deputy, media representatives, a police officer, and four protesters, required medical treatment following recent incidents.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has characterized some of the violence as “urban terror” and alleged that certain participants have criminal backgrounds or links to organized crime and foreign funding, specifically mentioning Iran. He has called for dialogue while warning that those inciting violence will face legal and financial consequences. Conversely, opposition figures and student organizers have rejected these claims, accusing the government of attempting to criminalize legitimate dissent and delegitimize the movement.
