Albanian PM Edi Rama urges EU reform and backs 2030 accession goal

Prime Minister Edi Rama gave a detailed interview to Estonia’s Postimees, denouncing what he sees as the European Union’s sluggish external policy. He argued that the EU erred by handing the Russia negotiations to the United States and warned that Europe is losing global influence.

Rama said the Union’s decision‑making is too slow and hampered by the growing number of vetoes. To speed up Albania’s own accession, he proposed that Tirana could forgo any future veto right, presenting it as a signal for a more functional and decisive Europe. He reaffirmed that Albania’s target of joining the EU by 2030 remains realistic, despite the delays caused by the Ukraine war.

The prime minister also dismissed claims linking a project in the Sazan area to former U.S. President Trump and reiterated earlier remarks made to The Observer about EU “morbid humour” and a lack of clear strategy.
