Albanian Protesters Demand Protection of National Assets at UN Headquarters

Around 100 Albanian migrants demonstrated in front of the United Nations building in Geneva, condemning what they described as the foreign appropriation and silent colonisation of Albania’s natural heritage. Speakers, including former Swiss MP and Green Party leader Ueli Leuenberger, warned that large‑scale real‑estate projects on Sazan Island and parts of the Albanian coast threaten collective heritage and local livelihoods. The protest called for transparent decision‑making, democratic participation and stricter scrutiny of powerful investors, insisting that Albania’s forests, lakes, mountains and coastline belong to its people, not to privileged foreign interests.

Organisers urged the Albanian government to ensure that any development serves the public interest and respects environmental standards, framing the rally as a defence of the country’s cultural and ecological identity.
