Albania tourism sector sees growth with 9.4 million foreign visitors
Albania is experiencing significant growth in its tourism sector. According to INSTAT data, the country welcomed 9.4 million foreign visitors during the first eight months of 2026, representing a 5.3% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Total entries, including both Albanian and foreign citizens, reached over 15.4 million during this period.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has set an ambitious target to reach 20 million annual tourists by 2030. He emphasized the need for high-quality investments to attract visitors with higher spending power, moving beyond the current trend of low-cost tourism.
Despite the rising numbers, industry experts note several ongoing challenges. These include infrastructure issues such as traffic, road quality, and parking, as well as concerns regarding cleanliness and the lack of a consistent calendar of major cultural events to encourage longer stays. Additionally, medical officials in Shkodra have reported an increased influx of patients, including tourists injured while navigating mountainous areas without proper guides.
