Albanian Riviera tourism boom drives rapid development in Himarë
Albania recorded a 34% rise in foreign tourists in 2024, making it one of the fastest‑growing destinations in Europe. Visitor numbers have climbed from about 3.4 million in 2014 to more than 11 million a decade later.
The surge is concentrated along the Adriatic coast between Vlorë and Sarandë, known as the Albanian Riviera. The town of Himarë, with its main beach Spile and the nearby Livadhi cove, is attracting travelers seeking scenery similar to Croatia or Italy at roughly two‑thirds the cost.
Large‑scale investment is reshaping the shoreline: luxury hotels, private villas and gated apartment complexes are replacing former pensione and vacant plots. The rapid construction has prompted questions about financing, with some reports suggesting links to organized crime and corruption.
Historically isolated under communist ruler Enver Hoxha, Albania has transformed from a closed, bunker‑strewn nation to a burgeoning tourist hub, marking a profound shift in its economic profile.
