Albany driving school owner faces charges for illegal operation

Charles Lanza, 54, is facing 11 misdemeanor charges after allegedly continuing to operate an unlicensed driving school in Albany, New York. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV) had previously revoked the license for ‘Learn to Drive’ in March 2025 following an administrative hearing and various complaints.

According to the NYSDMV, the business had operated for 15 years out of a former church on Lark Street. Students reported feeling unsafe, receiving poor instruction, and being told to drive vehicles that were not road-ready or properly inspected. Additionally, customers alleged they paid for instruction that was never provided. Lanza is scheduled to appear in Albany City Criminal Court and Bethlehem Town Court to answer the charges, which include operating an unlicensed driving school and acting as an unlicensed instructor.
