Rotterdam wholesale building destroyed by major fire

A large fire has destroyed a wholesale building on Sydneystraat in the Zestienhoven area of Rotterdam. The facility, which housed food wholesaler Al Baraka alongside companies Selectra and Vliegend Hard, covers approximately 4,500 square meters. The blaze broke out around 1:50 AM and spread rapidly, making it impossible for firefighters to save most of the structure.

Emergency services utilized cranes to dismantle parts of the building to reach active fire pockets. Due to heavy smoke and wind, an NL-Alert was issued, and local roads, including Matlingeweg at the intersection of Industrieweg and Hongkongstraat, were closed. Ash and soot particles have been reported across large parts of Rotterdam due to shifting winds.

Authorities have advised residents to clean play areas for children and wipe pets with wet cloths. For those with allotments or gardens, officials recommend thoroughly washing all produce. The police are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
