Albert Einstein's 17-page doctoral dissertation

The historical precedent set by Albert Einstein challenges the academic tradition that equates the thickness of a manuscript with its intellectual weight. In 1905, Einstein submitted a doctoral dissertation titled ‘Eine neue Bestimmung der Moleküldimensionen’ to the University of Zurich.

Despite the common expectation that dissertations should be voluminous, Einstein's work was only 17 pages long. He officially received his doctoral degree on January 15, 1906. While popular academic legends suggest the short length caused initial issues with his supervisor, the work itself was a substantive scientific contribution, though it did not contain his later monumental theories on general relativity or gravity.
