Albert Einstein's incognito 1925 visit to Lisbon
On March 11, 1925, physicist Albert Einstein visited Lisbon as an incognito tourist while traveling toward South America. Despite his global fame, his stop in Portugal went largely unnoticed by the official scientific community, including the director of the Lisbon Astronomical Observatory.
During his visit, Einstein explored local landmarks such as São Jorge Castle and the Jerónimos Monastery. He was particularly struck by the 'varinas', the traditional fishmongers of Lisbon, noting their proud demeanor and the fact that they often worked barefoot—a common practice before hygiene laws mandated footwear in 1928.
