Albert Horsfall, former NIA and DSS Director-General, dies at 84

Chief Albert Korubo Horsfall, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s intelligence community, has died at the age of 84. He passed away on Wednesday, September 9, at a hospital in Lagos following a prolonged illness.

Horsfall was a pioneer of Nigeria’s modern intelligence architecture. He served as the first Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and later as the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), now known as the Department of State Services (DSS), from 1990 to 1992. His earlier career included roles as a police officer and a founding staff member of the National Security Organisation (NSO).

Beyond intelligence, Horsfall contributed to regional development as the pioneer Chairman of the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC). His family and government officials described him as a distinguished statesman and a patriot who made significant contributions to the development of Rivers State and the Niger Delta.
