Albert Pujols to interview for Houston Astros manager role
The Houston Astros are scheduled to interview former MLB star Albert Pujols this week for their vacant managerial position. The interview is expected to take place in person at Daikin Park on Thursday. The search follows the departure of Joe Espada, whose contract was not renewed after the 2026 season.
Pujols, a three-time National League MVP and future Hall of Famer, has expressed interest in managing since his retirement in 2022. While he lacks Major League managerial experience, he recently led the Leones del Escogido to a Dominican Winter League title and managed the Dominican Republic to a third-place finish in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
The hiring process is being led by the Astros' new general manager, Randy Flores. Flores and Pujols were teammates on the St. Louis Cardinals, where they won the 2006 World Series. Other candidates reportedly being considered for the role include New York Yankees bench coach Brad Ausmus, Texas Rangers bench coach Luis Urueta, and former Astros player Morgan Ensberg.
