Albert Rösti Stresses Swiss Model’s Resilience on National Day

On Swiss National Day, 1 August, Federal Councillor Albert Rösti delivered a speech in Fehraltorf and Val Müstair, defending the core pillars of Switzerland’s political‑economic model. He highlighted economic freedom, armed neutrality, direct democracy, federalism and individual responsibility as the country’s decisive strengths.

Rösti warned that the international environment is becoming increasingly unstable, citing the war in Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East, rising tensions with Iran and growing protectionist measures that affect energy prices, supply chains and trade. He argued that Switzerland’s long‑standing values and flexible institutions enable it to adapt, pointing to past adjustments such as handling U.S. tariffs on Swiss exports.

The councillor also stressed energy security, supporting domestic hydro production and keeping the option to build new nuclear plants open to ensure autonomy. He concluded by urging national cohesion and confidence in the Swiss model amid global uncertainty.
