Bell Canada announces $50 billion AI infrastructure expansion in Saskatchewan

Bell Canada has announced a massive expansion of its AI infrastructure in Saskatchewan, a project that could involve a total capital investment of more than $50 billion. The plan involves quadrupling the size of a data centre currently under construction near Regina, increasing its capacity from 300 megawatts to a total of 1.2 gigawatts.

To support this growth, Bell plans to build 900 megawatts of its own power generation using partner-developed natural gas, utilizing Saskatchewan’s “Bring Your Own Power” rules rather than relying solely on the provincial grid. The project aims to provide a sovereign foundation for AI deployment and is expected to create between 800 and 1,200 construction jobs, up to 600 permanent roles, and approximately 3,000 community-based jobs.

The expansion is being developed in phases and remains a proposal subject to customer agreements, permits, and environmental assessments. Bell also intends to establish the head office for its national Bell AI Fabric ecosystem within the province.
