Alberta anti‑coal petition leader Corb Lund challenges verification results

Country‑music artist Corb Lund’s “Water Not Coal” campaign submitted more than 200,000 signatures to force a referendum on new coal mining on Alberta’s eastern slopes. The petition required 177,732 signatures, but after a second‑stage verification by Elections Alberta the count was reduced to about 172,000, leaving the effort short.

The campaign alleges that Elections Alberta’s verification calls may have lacked proper caller ID following a recent privacy breach affecting 2.9 million Albertans. Elections Alberta says caller ID displayed correctly for most carriers and that its statistical sampling method follows the Citizen Initiative Act. Lund has filed a judicial review in the Court of King's Bench, arguing the verification process was unreasonable and procedurally unfair, and asking the court to set aside the agency’s decision.
