Alberta approves self‑referred private diagnostic testing for adults

Alberta’s government has amended the Health Care Insurance Act and the Health Professions Act to allow adults 18 years and older to obtain preventative diagnostic imaging – MRI, CT, ultrasound and X‑ray – without a physician referral. The Orders in Council, effective July 31, let private clinics charge patients directly or through private insurance, with results uploaded to electronic health records and radiologists required to coordinate follow‑up care.

Patients whose tests lead to a cancer diagnosis may apply for reimbursement at publicly funded rates within one year, with claims typically processed in six to eight weeks. Premier Danielle Smith said the model expands choice, supports early detection and eases pressure on the public system. Critics, including the advocacy group Friends of Medicare, argue the policy circumvents the Canada Health Act and benefits only those who can afford out‑of‑pocket payments.
