Alberta crime severity index falls province‑wide as Prince Albert sees violent crime surge

Statistics Canada data show that Alberta's overall Crime Severity Index (CSI) dropped 10.4% in 2025, marking the lowest level since 2014. The decline was driven primarily by a 19% reduction in break‑and‑enter offences, while assault and threat rates remained stable. Alberta RCMP highlighted the trend as evidence of effective policing partnerships and noted recent investments such as a rural organized‑crime team and advanced surveillance technologies.

In contrast, the city of Prince Albert reported a 6.5% rise in its overall CSI for 2025, caused almost entirely by a 24.7% increase in the Violent Crime Severity Index. The Non‑Violent Crime Severity Index fell 7.3% during the same period. Police recorded a 45.3% weighted clearance rate for violent offences and pledged continued monitoring and community collaboration to address the surge.
