Alberta environmental groups criticize draft sub-regional plans
Four major environmental organizations in Alberta have issued a joint warning regarding three draft government sub-regional plans (SRPs) covering nearly one-fifth of the province. The plans, covering the Red Earth, Caribou Mountains, and Berland regions, are criticized for failing to provide sufficient evidence for the conservation and recovery of the threatened woodland caribou.
Critics argue the draft plans prioritize industrial expansion, including the doubling of oil and gas production and increased timber harvesting, over habitat protection. The organizations note that caribou recovery is framed as a goal to be reached in 100 years, a timeline they claim is insufficient for a species currently harmed by industry-caused habitat loss. The lack of supporting data is said to limit the public's ability to provide meaningful feedback on these long-term land use decisions.
