Alberta food banks face critical shortages as demand surges

Food banks across Alberta are facing critical inventory shortages as demand surges ahead of the holiday season. Darryl Burry, executive director of Food Banks Alberta, stated that the organization is experiencing an unprecedented level of scarcity within its warehouses, which typically supply 112 member food banks throughout the province.

Data indicates a significant spike in usage. In the first six months of 2025, the association distributed nearly 90 per cent of its total annual volume. In August, distribution volume was 32.8 per cent higher than the previous year. According to Food Bank Canada’s 2025 HungerCount, Alberta recorded over 210,000 average monthly food bank visits, representing a nearly 22 per cent increase from 2024.

Burry noted that the current lack of donations from corporate sponsors and supporters is complicating distribution efforts. He highlighted that many individuals seeking assistance are working people and families struggling to manage costs.
