Alberta government announces upcoming affordability and consumer protection laws
The Alberta government has announced a series of legislative measures scheduled for this fall aimed at addressing consumer costs and data protection. Government house leader Joseph Schow stated that new bills will focus on lowering auto insurance costs and providing enhanced protections regarding utility bills.
Additional consumer protection regulations are being developed for used vehicle sales and ticket resales. The province also plans to implement stronger rules concerning the development of artificial intelligence data centres.
While the legislature resumes following a referendum on Alberta's status within Canada, Schow noted that immigration reform legislation is not expected until at least the spring. Meanwhile, opposition NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi criticized the government's focus, specifically regarding proposed legislation intended to ensure merit-based public sector hiring.
