Alberta government introduces education bill and student support framework
The Alberta government has introduced the Education and Childcare (Securing Parental Involvement) Statutes Amendment Act, 2026. Introduced by Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides, the bill aims to standardize school report cards to reduce parental confusion regarding grading scales. If passed, the legislation would grant the minister authority to set report card guidelines for public, separate, and Francophone schools by the fall of 2027. The bill also requires school authorities to publicly report how teachers spend time when students are not in class.
Separately, the province has announced the Student Support and Policy Framework to guide the complexity teams initiative. This initiative, which follows the Class Size and Complexity Initiative, involves significant provincial investment to support students with mental health, academic, and behavioral needs. The Calgary Board of Education has reported early progress with the deployment of complexity teams at 118 schools since November 2025.
Opposition critics, including NDP critic Rakhi Pancholi, have characterized the report card bill as government interference in local school board responsibilities, arguing that the province should focus on classroom overcrowding and student supports instead.
