Alberta Government Overhauls Procurement with AI to Cut Costs

The Alberta provincial government is integrating artificial intelligence into its public‑service operations to transform how it procures digital services. Technology Minister Nate Glubish said at the Velocity Symposium that vendors must adapt to the new AI‑driven procurement model or risk being excluded. The province has published a series of open‑source Velocity White Papers outlining the methodology used over the past 18 months, which it invites other governments and industry partners to follow. Glubish cited examples such as a three‑year $54 million contract that was fulfilled internally with AI for just $2.5 million in under a year, representing a 95 % reduction in cost and time. Alberta has also signed a partnership with Quebec to share best practices on AI adoption within government.
