Alberta government overturns Edmonton housing rules

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has directed the City of Edmonton to abandon rules that allowed for multi-unit complexes in established neighbourhoods. The provincial government cited concerns regarding the suitability of such units and insufficient parking provisions.

Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas criticized the move, describing it as a “disturbing attack on local democracy.” While the provincial order does not currently mandate similar changes in Calgary, Farkas expressed concern that the precedent allows the province to impose its will on municipal leaders and their respective mandates.

Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack also expressed concerns regarding the provincial intervention. In contrast, Smith directed Calgary to maintain its existing rollback of similar housing rules, stating that the province intervened in Edmonton due to resident concerns and the impact of multi-unit developments.
