Alberta Indigenous leader criticizes government over missed Treaty 6 anniversary

Joey Pete, Grand Chief of the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations, has called for greater respect from the Alberta provincial government following the absence of the Indigenous Relations Minister at a major commemorative event. The event, hosted by the City of Edmonton, marked the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6.

While Indigenous dignitaries and various other government officials attended the ceremonies at Edmonton City Hall, the absence of Minister Rajan Sawhney drew criticism. Sawhney’s office stated the minister was away but remains committed to maintaining strong relationships and noted the anniversary is a significant milestone for reflection.

Chief Pete expressed concerns regarding the provincial government's lack of engagement on issues such as the upcoming Alberta separation referendum and proposed pipeline developments, stating the province has not made sufficient time for direct dialogue.
