CFB Wainwright fire kills four Canadian soldiers

A fast-moving fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta killed four soldiers and injured 39 others during a training exercise on Saturday afternoon. The victims, all members of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, have been identified as Sergeant Morgan Wong, Private Shaun Farrell, Private Aidan Goulding, and Private Hayden Lykkemark.

Major General Wade Rutland reported that the fire, which originated in a grass training area, was driven by ferocious winds that caused it to jump nearly one kilometer in less than a minute. The sudden advancement caught soldiers off guard during high-intensity combat training involving live munitions. At least 19 of the injured remain in critical condition, with some still fighting for their lives.

Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as one of the worst peacetime tragedies for the Canadian Armed Forces. While initial reports suggested potential damage to gas infrastructure, military officials have stated there are no indications of outside interference or damage to oil and gas pipelines. Fifty investigators from the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are currently examining the cause of the blaze.
