Alberta MLA Jennifer Johnson embarks on U.S. trade mission
Jennifer Johnson, the MLA for Lacombe-Ponoka, is traveling to Saint Paul, Minnesota, to attend the Council of State Governments (CSG) Midwest’s annual Midwestern Legislative Conference. The mission, occurring between August 27 and September 3, aims to promote Alberta’s economic interests and strengthen relationships with U.S. legislators, government officials, and industry leaders in sectors including energy, agriculture, and trade.
The mission comes amid escalating trade tensions between Canada and the United States. Following the collapse of recent trade negotiations, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will implement matching tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods, effective September 8, in response to tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The U.S. Midwest represents Alberta’s largest U.S. trade region. In 2025, bilateral trade between Alberta and the CSG Midwest member states totaled more than CAD $99.4 billion, with Alberta’s exports accounting for CAD $90.7 billion of that value.
