Alberta Mumaah wins national javelin gold in Ghana
Alberta Mumaah, a 15-year-old student from Saamambo JHS in the Wa West District, won the gold medal in the girls' javelin event at the 35th National Basic Schools Sports Festival in Accra. Her victory marked the only gold medal secured by the Upper West Region during the competition.
Mumaah’s training was characterized by significant improvisation; due to a lack of equipment at her school, her coach, Seidu Osman, carved a heavy wooden stick for her to use as a substitute for a standard javelin. After progressing from 28-metre throws in local competitions, she achieved a personal best of 32 metres to secure the national title.
Following her achievement, Wa West Member of Parliament Supt. (Rtd) Peter Lanchene Toobu has adopted Mumaah. He has pledged to cover her school fees and the full cost of her sports training, and has provided her with cash and three standard javelins for her continued development.
