Alberta NDP wins Calgary-Shaw by-election

Kyle Campbell of the Alberta NDP has won the Calgary-Shaw by-election, flipping a seat that has historically been a stronghold for the United Conservative Party (UCP). Unofficial results indicate Campbell received 7,461 votes, defeating UCP candidate Mike Derry, who earned 6,879 votes.

The by-election was triggered by the resignation of former UCP MLA and environment minister Rebecca Schulz. The victory marks a significant moment for the NDP, led by Naheed Nenshi, who stated the result demonstrates momentum in Calgary and suggests there are no longer safe UCP seats in the city.

While the NDP celebrated the win, UCP Premier Danielle Smith congratulated Campbell and expressed a commitment to working constructively with the new MLA to address constituency needs. Other candidates in the race included Progressive Tory Kyle Joseph, Liberal John Roggeveen, and Independent Rolly Ashdown.
