Alberta peace officer faces no charges for AI sexual images
An Alberta Sheriffs peace officer will not face criminal charges after an investigation into AI-generated sexual images found on his personal phone. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) concluded that because the images were created before Canadian law was expanded to cover AI-generated intimate imagery, no criminal offense occurred under existing statutes. The changes made by Ottawa later in 2026 cannot be applied retroactively.
The investigation began in June 2026 after sexualized, computer-generated images of three women, including coworkers, were discovered. The officer admitted to creating the images using an app that fabricates intimate pictures from social media photos but stated he did not share or distribute them. ASIRT found no evidence that the images were posted, sent, or that there were threats to publish them.
While no criminal charges will be laid, ASIRT described the behavior as serious and harmful. The officer has been removed from active duty, and the Alberta Sheriffs are conducting an internal investigation regarding violations of the agency’s code of conduct.
