Alberta Premier Danielle Smith calls Calgary-Shaw byelection

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has called a provincial byelection for the Calgary-Shaw riding, scheduled to take place on September 14, 2026. The seat has been vacant since May, following the resignation of former United Conservative Party (UCP) cabinet minister Rebecca Schulz.

The UCP has named Mike Derry, a business owner with experience in the oil and gas sector, as its candidate. Premier Smith described Derry as a community-minded individual who will advocate for low taxes and economic growth.

The Alberta NDP, led by Naheed Nenshi, is fielding Kyle Campbell as its candidate. Nenshi has framed the election as a choice against a government that caters to separatists. Additionally, the Progressive Tory Party, led by former UCP minister Peter Guthrie, is expected to participate in the vote.
