Alberta Premier warns of foreign influence targeting separatist referendum

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has acknowledged that foreign influence campaigns are targeting the province’s upcoming referendum on separation. Smith stated that while there has been no evidence of criminal involvement in the process, the province is seeing influence campaigns and information being amplified by bot farms that may have links to Russia.

Research utilizing Cipher AI, a technology designed to track foreign influence, has linked a surge in online activity to a Russian-based content farm known as the Pravda Network. This operation aims to stoke discord and spread misleading content to erode social cohesion and trust in democratic institutions.

In addition to covert Russian involvement, reports indicate overt involvement from the United States. This includes statements from U.S. political figures and media personalities aligned with Donald Trump regarding the Alberta separatist movement. Premier Smith, who receives briefings from CSIS and the RCMP, has urged citizens to verify social media sources before sharing content.
