Alberta voters reject independence in provincial referendum

In a provincial referendum held on October 19, 2026, approximately 75 to 76 percent of Albertans voted to remain part of Canada, decisively rejecting a move toward independence. The results represent a political victory for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and a setback for separatist movements that had sought support from figures in the United States.

While the province rejected the path to a binding separation referendum, voters supported several other measures. Unofficial results indicate that a majority of Albertans voted for increased provincial control over immigration and stricter requirements for proof of citizenship to vote. Additionally, over 50 percent of respondents supported a measure that would require non-permanent residents to pay premium fees to access healthcare and education systems.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith stated she intends to honor the results and does not plan to hold another independence referendum while in office. However, political analysts note that the separatist movement remains active, and the results on immigration and public service access may provide the provincial government with increased leverage to pursue more restrictive policies regarding temporary residents and newcomers.
