Alberta, Saskatchewan, and NWT sign nuclear energy pact

Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on nuclear power and regional electricity transmission. The agreement establishes a framework for sharing information and working together on various nuclear technologies, including large reactors, small modular reactors, and microreactors.

The partnership aims to address rising electricity demand across Western Canada and the North by focusing on grid security, long-term affordability, and carbon-neutral electricity paths. The jurisdictions will coordinate on several key areas, including technology selection, financing, environmental reviews, regulatory approvals, uranium supply, and nuclear waste management.

Alberta is expected to release a nuclear energy roadmap early next year as part of this collaborative effort.
